Monterrey are settled in the United States and ready to begin their Leagues Cup campaign. The Cerro de la Silla-based team’s first rival will be Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake. The Albiazules’ tournament debut is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday 25 July at America First Field Stadium, a venue located in Sandy, Utah.
It will not be the first time that Monterrey have faced Real Salt Lake – there is a history of games between the two in the CONCACAF Champions League. They met in the 2011 final, at the now-extinct Estadio Tecnológico, with the first leg ending 2-2; Aldo De Nigris opened the scoring but his effort was cancelled out by Nat Borchers. Monterrey restored their lead from the penalty spot through Humberto Suazo only for Javier Morales to pull the North Americans back level again with a minute on the clock.
